The Tradition of Eastern NC Fish Stew
Every October, Pleasant Hill Christian Church in Pink Hill, NC hosts its annual Harvest Festival on the last Saturday of the month. One of the most beloved traditions is our Eastern Carolina fish stew, first prepared decades ago by Mr. Frances Swinson and Mr. Horace King (pictured above).
Though Frances has since passed away and Horace is no longer able to serve, their children have proudly stepped in to continue the legacy. Friends and neighbors gather at noon to enjoy the stew before the evening auction begins. This tradition, rooted in family and community, was even featured in Our State Magazine in January 2018 in the article “The Melting Pot: Eastern Carolina Fish Stew,” which highlighted the rich heritage of this dish and its lasting place in Eastern North Carolina culture.
